Make a Difference Day Sat., May 1st, 2010

On May 1, 2010, Concord Church in collaboration with GOandBE.org saturated the Oak Cliff community with over 1000 volunteers and provided acts of kindness and services to a variety of all segments of the community. In one single day, we reached out and touched the lives of individuals around us who are often overlooked such as seniors in nursing homes, AIDS caregivers, pregnant teens and the military.

We also hosted the Dallas Oral Cancer walk in partnership with Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry.

Our list of projects:

Affirmation of Public Servants: Deliver expressions of gratitude and concern to police, fire, emergency, and city officials.

Assembly Projects: AIDS Caregivers:  Targeting youth to assemble basic medical supplies to comfort the sick, protect caregivers, and prevent the spread of infection in Haiti.

Assembly Projects: Homeless: The youth of Concord  assembled hygiene products in backpacks to serve a minimum of 50 homeless individuals.

Baby Shower: Partnering with local schools/agencies (pre-screening) to provide a baby shower for 50 teenage Mothers-to-be.

Backyard Kids Club: Gathering of children from a targeted apartment complex for games, entertainment and bible study.

Car Maintenance: Providing general car care clinic – oil changes, tire check, 18 point check list and top off vital automotive fluids.

Car Wash: Provide free car washes to local community.

Care for Caregivers:  Volunteer base will write a devotional (over a 3 week timeframe) and assemble 350 copies of the devotional to deliver to nursing homes and community care facilities.

Care Packages for the Military: Prepare care packages for the United States Military in Iraq.

Children’s Outreach:  The Children’s Ministry (SEEDS) created and sent greeting cards to children in Scottish Rite Hospital. You may register your child if in grades 1st to 5th.

Financial Management 101 :  Provided financial workshops for adults and young adults (seniors and college students) from the community.

Food Collection: Distribution of non-perishable foods to homebound of Concord Church.   

Gas Outreach: Provided gas for seniors with limited income and the unemployed during these difficult economic times.

Haiti Relief: Provided non-perishable items, clothing and hygiene products to the families and children of Haiti.

Health Fair:  Provided preventive health screenings, education and wellness (physical, mental, and spiritual) to individuals in the South Oak Cliff area, and the surrounding communities. 

Holmes Street Foundation: Provided spring cleaning services to the Holmes Street Foundation, a residential housing treatment center.

Home Repair: Partnering with People Helping People to provide light home repair and painting to those in need, and reside within a ten (10) mile radius of Concord’s zip code.

Homebound Visitation: Personal visits to all Concordians who are homebound.

Interfaith Housing:  Providde service day ministry outreach and various products to Interfaith Housing, who provides transitional housing for Dallas-area homeless parents and children.

Kinship Caregiver:  Provided support, assistance and aid to families who have made a commitment to raising children of relatives involved with Child Protective Services.

Lunch Prep/Delivery : On-site lunch prep for select projects.

MADD  CookoutTarget the Barbara Jordan community apartment complex and provide food, entertainment and bible study.

Nursing Home : Teams traveled to Nursing Home facilities and minister to staff and residents through bible study, prayer and singing. 

Prayer Project:  Providing prayer covering for all outreach projects. Base four hour coverage in the Prayer Room and some individuals will travel to off-site event locations and others will cover in-house events.

Publicity TeamA street team utilized to help publicize projects to the community (including the car wash, car maintenance, health fair and financial seminars). 

Random Acts of Kindness : Volunteers traveled to a nearby community to bless people by random acts of kindness.

Rehoboth Project: Volunteers provided assistance to a son of Concord for the beautification of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Sewing Project :  Project focus is to ties for the young men at the Holmes Street Foundation in honor of Sis. Blair.  

Yard Work :  Partnering with People Helping People to provide light yard and maintenance work for the disenfranchised in our community.
